Course Description
This program examines the infamous 1893 trial of Lizzie Borden, accused of murdering her father and stepmother with an axe. Using trial transcripts, period press coverage, and modern legal analysis, we will explore the case’s evidentiary issues, trial strategy, jury dynamics, and the strategies employed to create reasonable doubt in a purely circumstantial case. Participants will evaluate how 19th-century legal procedures compare to current standards, and consider how public opinion, gender norms, and media influence shaped both the trial and its outcome.

Course Description
In the freezing winter of 2022, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe was found dead in a snowbank outside a fellow officer’s home. His girlfriend, Karen Read, was accused of killing him with her SUV and leaving him to die. What followed were two high-profile trials — the first ending in a mistrial, the second in a full acquittal — that captured national attention and became a masterclass in the art of creating reasonable doubt. In this engaging, story-driven CLE, we’ll walk through both trials, analyze the prosecution’s and defense’s theories, compare the two proceedings, and break down the strategies that led to the ultimate not-guilty verdict. Along the way, you’ll gain practical trial tips for defending circumstantial murder cases, managing pretrial publicity, and leveraging jury instructions to your advantage.

Course Description
There is no better teacher than Hollywood. In this class, lawyers will learn the law in a unique way – through the lens of Hollywood. We will start with the movie Molly’s Game which tells the story of a former mogul skier who runs an illegal gambling operation. During this session, we will learn the federal law on gaming and how it is currently being enforced. In Amistad we learn about the Supreme Court case U.S. v. Schooner, and the importance of this decision to current civil rights litigation. On the Basis of Sex is the story of how Ruth Bader Ginsburg sought to eradicate discrimination on the basis of sex. This story culminates with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia, and opinion written by RBG herself. In Truth, we learn about how the law deals with potentially defamatory journalism practices. In Mississippi Burning, we learn how the civil rights laws were used to pursue justice when three civil rights workers were murdered in Mississippi and local officials wanted to look the other way. Finally, in the Judgement at Nuremberg we learn how the law can be used to seek justice when crimes against humanity occur.

Course Description
In 399 BCE, Socrates, revered as one of history’s greatest philosophers, was tried in Athens for corrupting the youth and impiety by introducing new deities. Beneath these charges lay a deeper conflict: a clash between Athens’ pure democracy, where the people held sway, and the Socratic critique that echoed the Spartan ideal of rule by enlightened "philosopher kings." Prosecutors accused Socrates of poisoning young minds with ideas that challenged the democratic system, revealing a tension between unfettered majority rule and the pursuit of reasoned governance. This CLE explores how Socrates’ trial illuminates this enduring struggle, which continues to shape modern legal systems. We will examine the trial’s impact on public trials, jury systems, academic freedom, and the regulation of free thought, while drawing parallels to contemporary debates over democracy versus expertise in law and governance. Join us to discover how this ancient case proves that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Course Description
A nation in its infancy faced the first true test of its laws. President Adams, as one of his last official duties, appointed William Marbury as a justice of the peace. Even though the Senate quickly confirmed the appointment, Adams failed to have the appointment delivered. The incoming president, Thomas Jefferson, no fan of John Adams, refused to have the appointment delivered. And so Marbury sued the new Secretary of State James Madison, seeking a mandamus compelling him to deliver the appointment. A young nation’s laws hung in the balance. This class looks at the arguments that were made, the strategies, and the ramifications today of the holding in this landmark case.

Course Description
On May 25, 2020, Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd's neck for over nine minutes during an arrest for allegedly passing a counterfeit $20 bill, leading to Floyd's death. The incident, captured on bystander video, sparked global protests against police brutality and racial injustice. Chauvin was convicted in April 2021 of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter, sentenced to 22.5 years in state prison (plus a concurrent 21-year federal sentence for civil rights violations). This CLE examines the case's facts, trial dynamics, and due process implications, drawing parallels to broader criminal justice issues.

This class is a comprehensive de-briefing of the law. Starting with ethics, we review the crazy predicaments some ethically-challenged attorneys have found themselves. You will have to decide based on the severity of the facts and the relevant model rule, would you take a deal for that violation. While Hollywood might not be setting the finest examples when it comes to actual morals and ethics, they do a good job of exhibiting legal ethics. We will explore the Model Rules through the eyes of Hollywood. From Hollywood, it’s not a long journey to our legal rock stars – the Nine! The Supreme Court, aka, the Real League of Justice, has been busy exerting their super hero legal powers. We will review recent landmark Supreme Court cases, regarding issues like regulating free speech on the internet, presidential immunity, and separation of powers. Course Description
One could not script a more textbook circumstantial case for murder. Casey Anthony, the mother of Caylee, went awol for 31 days. During this time, she routinely lied about not only what she was doing, but the existence of her daughter. When Casey finally surfaced, her car smelled like a dead body had been in it. She took the police on a 30-minute tour of Universal Studios, her supposed employer, before being cornered, literally and figurately, in her lie. She claimed her daughter was missing but decided to exercise her right to be silent and would not help the police find her “missing” daughter. So how did she walk away from her trial a free woman? The tale of the Casey Anthony murder trial is a lesson in the dangers of over prosecution, the pitfalls of a circumstantial case, and the litigation of reasonable doubt.

Your mother always told you – you can learn things the easy way … or the hard way! This class allows you to learn legal ethics – the easy way. By reviewing the mistakes other lawyers have made, from advising clients to put a sign up in their yard announcing illegal activity was going on inside the house, to lawyers getting opposing counsel drunk just to score some points with the jury, this class hands out the Darwinian Awards. Charles Darwin had a theory that only the fittest survive. Well … you can be among the fittest by adjusting your behavior to not match these lawyers.

Finally, we will take a countdown of the Top 10 Wacky cases. You might be surprised what you will learn about legal strategy from these headline cases.

How to Register with Zoom
- Log in to your Comedian of Law account
- Click on "My Courses" in the left blue column
- Click on the webinar you wish to register with Zoom for from your list of "Upcoming Live Programs"
- Fill out the short Zoom registration sheet and click on “Register” to complete
- You will then receive an email from Zoom, which will have your personal link to access the webinar.
- PLEASE NOTE: Sometimes the success page from Zoom doesn't display right in the window on our website (by Freestone Learning Management System), please check your email, including your spam/junk folder for your Zoom email, as 99% of the time, your registration was caught by Zoom and the email was sent. If you haven’t received the email within an hour, please contact our office at info@comedianoflaw.com and we will have Zoom resend it or help you register with Zoom.
Important Information Regarding Registration
- Please do not wait until 2 minutes before the webinar to register with Zoom if possible, as you cannot log in until you get the email from Zoom and while email is usually instantaneous, we all know that isn’t always the case.
- You must be watching the webinar in order to get credit. Most states accredit webinars differently than other formats and in order to get webinar credit, you must be watching, not just listening using the audio only link.
- There will be poll questions every hour, as many states require them. If you don’t answer the poll question and your state requires them, we can’t award credit for that hour. The poll questions are NOT obscure, as Joel always announces them before he runs them, and he reads them out loud. If your state requires you answer them, please don’t miss them. Please note that you will not be able to answer poll questions if you are using an audio only link, which is another reason you need to be WATCHING (not just listening to audio only version) the video presentation.
Written Materials
Written materials are available in your COL account after you have purchased a webinar.
- Log in to your Comedian of Law account

- Click on the webinar you wish to view the written materials for from your list of "Upcoming Live Programs"
- The written materials will then be under "Downloadable Materials"
How to Get Credit for the Webinar
1. All webinar certificates are done by hand, so you will not get them when the webinar is over. We have to cross reference your log in and log out times and your poll questions to figure out how much credit you earned.
2. You will receive your certificate of attendance within two weeks of the webinar and it will be sent to the email address you used when you registered with Zoom for the webinar.
3. The bar information you enter into Zoom is the bar information that will be on your certificate of attendance. Please be sure that information is correct.
4. We cannot submit attendance to states that we did not have the webinar approved in. We also do not produce certificates of attendance for states that the webinar was not approved in, without a special request. If you want one with another state info on it, please let us know by email at info@comedianoflaw.com. Please note that the certificate will only note the additional bar information, no other information will change as the course wasn’t approved in the state.
5. If you are submitting your COL hours to another state (that COL didn’t have prior approval in) and they request a timed agenda, course description and/or speaker biography, it is available in your account, in the same place as the written materials.
6. Comedian of Law will report to all states that the course was approved in, that are provider report states. If your state is a self-reporting state (like FL, IA or MO for example), we will not report your hours. Hours are usually reported to states right before certificates of attendance are emailed.
