This class is a comprehensive de-briefing of the law. Starting with ethics, we review the crazy predicaments some ethically-challenged attorneys have found themselves. You will have to decide based on the severity of the facts and the relevant model rule, would you take a deal for that violation. While Hollywood might not be setting the finest examples when it comes to actual morals and ethics, they do a good job of exhibiting legal ethics. We will explore the Model Rules through the eyes of Hollywood. From Hollywood, it’s not a long journey to our legal rock stars – the Nine! The Supreme Court, aka, the Real League of Justice, has been busy exerting their super hero legal powers. We will review recent landmark Supreme Court cases, regarding issues like regulating free speech on the internet, presidential immunity, and separation of powers. Finally, we will take a countdown of the Top 10 Wacky cases. You might be surprised what you will learn about legal strategy from these headline cases.

Sex, drugs and rock-n-roll don’t just dominate the Hollywood scene, it permeates the legal scene as well. This CLE will take a closer look at the laws behind sex, drugs and rock-n-roll. Starting with legal ethics, a dominate theme with attorney discipline cases is inappropriate relationships with clients and substance abuse. This class explores the ABA Model Rules on appropriate relations and communications with clients, as well as its rules on substance abuse and competency. We then explore the Murdaugh Murder, a case where violations of the ABA Model Rules resulted in two murder convictions. More than anything else, the Murdaugh case is a harrowing tale of how substance abuse can take over a person’s life and cause one to do things otherwise unimaginable. Finally, we will cover the basics of copyright law as it applies to rock music.
This CLE is presented by Joel Oster of Comedian of Law and Jim Jesse of Rock N' Roll Law.

There is no better teacher than Hollywood. In this class, lawyers will learn the law in a unique way – through the lens of Hollywood. We will start with the movie Molly’s Game which tells the story of a former mogul skier who runs an illegal gambling operation. During this session, we will learn the federal law on gaming and how it is currently being enforced. In Amistad we learn about the Supreme Court case U.S. v. Schooner, and the importance of this decision to current civil rights litigation. On the Basis of Sex is the story of how Ruth Bader Ginsburg sought to eradicate discrimination on the basis of sex. This story culminates with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia, and opinion written by RBG herself. In Truth, we learn about how the law deals with potentially defamatory journalism practices. In Mississippi Burning, we learn how the civil rights laws were used to pursue justice when three civil rights workers were murdered in Mississippi and local officials wanted to look the other way. Finally, in the Judgement at Nuremberg we learn how the law can be used to seek justice when crimes against humanity occur.

Course Description

How to Get Credit for the CLE
1. You will be given an certificate of attendance form to complete at the end of the course. Please fill this out accurately and give it to Joel before you leave the venue.
2. If you would like a copy for yourself, please take a picture of the form or fill out a second form and keep that one for yourself.
3. Please note that we cannot submit attendance for attorneys that didn't submit their certificate of attendance at the end of the CLE, so please be sure to turn the form in. If your state charges a late fee to providers for submitting attendance late, the attorney that failed to submit their form will be responsible for that fee.
4. We cannot submit attendance to states that we did not have the CLE approved in. You will be responsible to submit that attendance yourself.
5. If you are submitting your COL hours to another state (that COL didn’t have prior approval in) and they request a timed agenda, course description and/or speaker biography, it is available in your account, in the same place as the written materials.
6. Comedian of Law will report to all states that the course was approved in, that are provider report states. If your state is a self-reporting state (like FL, IA or MO for example), we will not report your hours.
