Course Description
This program examines the infamous 1893 trial of Lizzie Borden, accused of murdering her father and stepmother with an axe. Using trial transcripts, period press coverage, and modern legal analysis, we will explore the case’s evidentiary issues, trial strategy, jury dynamics, and the strategies employed to create reasonable doubt in a purely circumstantial case. Participants will evaluate how 19th-century legal procedures compare to current standards, and consider how public opinion, gender norms, and media influence shaped both the trial and its outcome.
